How to specify

BONDED AGGREGATE

Specification for Resin Bonded Surface Treatment

The resin adhesive (or binder) shall be from a manufacturer experienced and specialised in producing High Skid Resistant Surfacing binders, supplied and installed by Woodroyd Limited, 94 Wood Walk, Wombwell, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S73 ONF. Tel: 01226 270025. Fax: 01226 757491.

The aggregate shall be decorative, naturally occurring stone* supplied by Woodroyd Limited, of nominal size 1mm to 3.5mm. The type and colour of aggregate shall be approved by the Architect before installation.

The system shall be installed by hand fully in compliance with the binder manufacturer's instructions.

The binder shall consist of Woodroyd's HFS, mixed and applied at a thickness indicated by the manufacturer as being suitable for the size of aggregate to be used*. Before initial set, the adhesive shall be covered with the specified aggregate. The aggregate shall be broadcast evenly over the applied resin by hand to completely cover the surface.

Once the binder has cured, the excess aggregate shall be removed by vacuum or brushing.

* NOTE:

Typically, and as a guide, for 1mm to 3.5mm aggregate 2kg per m² of binder will be required: 6kg of aggregate is applied of which, about 4kg will remain adhered on completion.

Aggregates vary in price. It would be wise to try to specify a particular type so that uniformity of pricing can be achieved. As a suggestion: initially specify a common material such as “Golden Pea Gravel” for pedestrian areas, (a round comfortable grain) and “Calcined Bauxite” for trafficked areas, (a sharper more angular hard wearing grain). The aggregate can be re-specified after the contract is let usually without incurring additional cost.
