Flowing Screeds

Flowing Screeds are gradually becoming the screed of choice, replacing conventional sand and cement screeds in many construction environments.

In most circumstances, Calcium Sulphate Screeds are preferred, however, Cement Based Flowing Screeds are available for use in permanently wet or external applications, or where a structural component is required.

This is no longer necessary

The installation of flowing screeds will differ in several minor ways depending on the choice of material and the job in hand. The basic installation technique, however, is relatively simple and quick.


Initially the area to be screeded is covered in polythene sheet.

This is not intended as a damp proof membrane, but both as a debonding membrane to prevent the screed from sticking to the underlying surface, and to prevent leakage of the liquid screed.


Where the screed is installed on insulation it also traps the inevitable beads of polystyrene that would otherwise float to the surface and cause soft spots.

The joints in the polythene film are taped to prevent leakage.

A foam edging strip is fixed to walls to provide a facility for the screed to expand. A thicker strip is used where the screed is over Under Floor Heating.


Small tripod level indicators are set up using a laser level and the screed is poured into place.

Finally, the screed is agitated to bring it to a flat and uniform surface.
